How every guide is built
Each guide starts with the question a real person types at a moment of stress: the title is lost, the lien will not release, the buyer is waiting. We then work the answer out against official sources until the page answers it completely.
Sources we trust
Only official ones. State DMV and revenue department websites, state statutes, NHTSA for federal title rules, AAMVA for electronic lien and title programs, and the NMVTIS database for vehicle history. The complete list is on our sources page. Third-party blogs and forums are used at most as leads - never as evidence.
How we verify numbers
- Fees come from the state's own fee schedule page, never from a blog's summary.
- Form numbers are confirmed on the agency's forms list, and we link to the official PDF or page.
- Processing times are stated only where the agency publishes them; otherwise we say so honestly.
- State comparisons are built from each state's page individually, never copied from a listicle.
How we handle change
States change fees and forms without ceremony. When we find a change, we update the guide and note the new number. When a reader reports a mismatch, we verify it the same way and correct it. If a detail cannot be confirmed for the current year, we mark it as such instead of printing a stale number.
